Travis is a musician adrift. He lives in a modest apartment, plays gigs in small clubs, and still mourns his former bandmate. Ellen, in her forties, feels stuck: her husband is twenty years her senior, their attempt to adopt a child has stalled, and the passion in her marriage has faded. After a chance meeting at a wedding, they begin meeting in a nondescript hotel room. What starts as a physical escape soon becomes something more profound. Their conversations grow longer, their secrets spill out, and they begin to see in each other the possibility of a different life.

Marc Meyers wrote the script years before filming, but set it aside after his previous film Harvest (2010). After several years of marriage, he returned to the story, eager to explore a type of intimacy he had never put on screen. The film was shot in New York and Woodstock on an independent budget, with no trailers or luxuries. Amy Hargreaves described the experience as “down and dirty, in the trenches,” but said that the trust she placed in Meyers and McGorry made the many love scenes feel safe and authentic.
