You cannot attack a barbarian village with a single ram-ship. Barbarians have coastal defenses. You need to win the naval battle before your ground troops even land.

At certain milestone levels, the game will offer you a "Peace Treaty" in exchange for resources. Do not accept it. Accepting the treaty resets the Barbarian Village back to Level 1, destroying your progress and wiping out a highly lucrative, repeatable source of loot.
